Exploring Gender Diversity in Transgender and Non-Binary Adults Accessing a Specialized Service in Italy

In Italy, studies investigating gender identity and expression in non-conforming adults are lacking, as well data regarding the non-binary population. The present study aimed at dimensionally exploring how transgender Italian identify express their gender. Gender Diversity Questionnaire (GDQ) was administered to a sample of 112 adult subjects aged 18–60 years accessing gender-specialized service Rome. majority participants were 18–24 (53.6%), whereas fewer 25–35 (32%) 35 older (14.3%). Most (83.9%) identified themselves trans binary, while remaining (16.1%) non-binary. Trans binary reported stable identity, more fluid over time across contexts. Younger recognized use chosen names, pronouns, clothes important for expression, attributed importance physical appearance emotions. Differences gender-affirmative interventions emerged between transbinary participants. Findings evidence that services have unique needs features, thus it is essential shed light on this population by providing greater visibility recognition.
